can a injured worker be denied benefits under work comp if a positive drug test confirms substance use the day of injury?

Yes, and you need to contact a worker's comp attorney ASAP. The point of the drug test is so that the employer can say that your injury was caused by you being under the influence which takes responsibility from them.
