Legal Question in Workers Comp in North Carolina

Workers' Compensation Lawsuite

About a year ago my father in-law hurt his knee while on the job as a Corrections Officer. They found out that his knee was going to have to be replaced. He found a lawyer that would take his case against the state and the workers' compensation doctor was totally on his side. The knee was replaced and the lawyer was saying he was going to make a lot of money off this case. He said that it was a opened and closed case, because of what happened. There was no questions about what happened. The lowyer was giving rough estimates of around $5 million, because it has taken nearly $2 million after all the bills to replace the knee. Now that the surgery is over they have found that the workers' compensation doctor has put in the wrong size knee replacement and the lawyer is saying that they are going to at most receive $75,000 if they are lucky. My question is this, why would the lawyer suddenly change his tune about how much he can make off this law suite? It seems that both the doctor and the lawyer are both changing what they originally told my father in-law all along. What are the options for them to receive the full benefits? Should they get a new lawyer? The surgeries are not going to pay for themselves.
