Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Dakota

Earlier today I was at Walmart in Fargo, ND and did something really stupid. I am making bracelets for two little girls and I bought the wrong string size yesterday. So today, I just ripped off a few inches of the right sized string put it in my pocket and put the rest back. I bought my $20 worth of groceries and when I left the store I was stopped. I was brought into a room and had my info taken down and questioned. I am 21 years old and have never ever even thought about shoplifting before. The value of the total set of string was about $4.00 and I am just wondering what I could possibly be the consequences of this very dumb mistake.

You will likely be charged in Fargo Municipal court with theft (shoplifting). It is a B-misdemeanor punishable by 30 days in jail and $1000 fine or both. If this is your first offense you likely face a fine only. However a theft can be a serious mark on your record and you should not made any decisions without speaking to an attorney first.
