Of course it is possible to be unrepresented...but not wise. Usually an insurance company will answer and they clearly do not have your best interests at heart. Further, trial attorneys like myself have a good idea of the rough value of a case, based on extensive experience, and this value is in line with the appropriate compensation, which may either be more or less than you think.

In any event, in NY, personal injury attorneys generally work on a percentage basis, so that the more you succeed, the more that they succeed. Also, personal injury awards are generally not taxable, as they compensate you, and are not income.
