Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

Name Changes

I have a 4 year old daughter and her father is trying to get me to change her last name to his. I do not want it changed, but he is taking me to court over the matter. So my question is can a juvenile judge or magistrate make me change my daughter's last name?

Re: Name Changes

The answer to your question is Yes. The Ohio Revised Code gives

the Ohio Probate Courts the authority to order the name change of

a minor child upon the application of the natural parent. The

basis for your disagreement with the request is relevant and

will be considered by the Court. You should certainly plan to

attend the hearing to present your position.
