Legal Question in Business Law in Ohio

I worked as a manager of a talent agency and was paid as a salaried employee, and also performed tasks for the same company as an independent contractor, receiving payment separate of my salary and being a 1099 for the contractor duties.

Separate of my salary, my 1099 contractor duties/ earnings totaled close to $2800 in work. I was the only full time employee and office manager, and the only individual aside from the owner who was authorized to perform accounting duties and billing and receivables. These duties also required me to process my own paychecks for salaried and contractor work. This was authorized by the owner of the business.

The business was closed 6mo ago and I was contacted by a local sheriff that my former employer filed a suit (criminal but could possibly go civil) stating that the payments for my contractor work amounting to $2800 was stolen/ unauthorized. What are the steps and what am I to expect?
