Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Ohio
Fired from job after 1 1/2 yrs. for working part-time when I got hired as part-
I worked in an animal hospital working part-time and I go to school (to be a registered vet-tech)full-time. I was informed today, with no notice or reason, that ''the 'part-time people' at our practice aren't working out''. There are 6 part-time people in our office and as of today only 3 look like they are going to be fired. I have a spotless employment record. I have called in only 1 time in 1 1/2 yrs due to illness and I am always on time (most of the time very early due to the closeness of the office compared to my home). I fill in for others and did so twice just last week (which I pointed out when I was dismissed). I would like to know if it is legal to fire an employee with no notice for doing what they were hired to do? In my employee manual it does state '' After 4-month trial period, the employee who is not performing up to standards will be told so in at least one conferance with (said Dr.). If (said Dr.)notes no improvement, the employee will be terminated.'' According to the manual, I have not violated any of the policies, and have received no written notice of any violation, as also stated in the manual.

Consult a lawyer who specializes in employment law or wrongful discharge law for a review of your employee handbook to see if it provides an expectation of future employment, and to see if your discharge meets any other requirements. Recommendations can be gotten from your local Bar Association. At-will employees may be terminated for any reason or no reason at all. If you did not have a formal employment contract, then the personnel manual is all you have to fall back on. Get professional advice.
