Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio
There is a company National Mediation Group that has called me and telling me I owe a debt from a online Payday company from 2008 which isnt true, it isnt my debt, however this man is reading off my information such as my last place of employment (but not my current place) he reads me the last 4 digits of my social security number and tells me if I dont come up with a payment of 3800 from what was supposed to be a 200 loan they are going to send paperwork to my county and sue me. He called my current place of employment and my parents house and disclosed all of the same stuff to my dad. Now I dont owe this and after researching them on line, they have a second rate website and apparently pride themselves on using any means necessary to collect on debts. I did a search of the number sent to me and I see it was a cell phone number not an actual business and as well as numerous amount of people have complained these people have harassed them for months. I dont want these people screwing up my job calling me over a debt I dont owe. Is it legal for them to do this and besides sending them personal information how can prove them it wasnt me without exposing myself with further information?

You can tell them (and I would tell them in writing) that you want them to do an investigation of the debt they claim you owe and put them on notice as well that you don't believe you owe the debt. You can also tell them that you do not wish for them to contact you any more.
If they continue on, then you will likely have a case against them under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Make sure that you make photocopies of everything that you send them (don't just keep the word processing documents on your computer) and make sure that you keep a log of any time they call you and what was said.
