im on disablity,and being sued

Hi, im on ss disabilty and have been for about 5 years,i just got a summons today,im being sued for a credit card bill, that i stopped paying back in 2002,when i became ill,and went on disability.Can they make me pay this,my only income is disablity,i cant afford to pay them.They cant take it from me,and make me pay them can they?.thanks sharon

Your social security disability income is exemption from attachement by creditors. However, that does not prevent creditors from hounding you to pay the bill! If you do not respond to the summons, a default judgment for the amount requested will be granted.
