Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio
Liability for returned check charges.
I bounced a check for $31 but the store owner then incurred a $25 charge from their bank. I have paid them the $31 but they are demanding the additional $25. Am I liable for the returned check charges?

Re: Liability for returned check charges.
Most states have a law setting the maximum the victim of a bad check can charge the person who wrote the check. In Connecticut, for example, the maximum is $20, but you would have to check to see what it is in Ohio. If it's $20 there, too, you might as well pay the $25.00 so you can go into that store again. And remember, YOU wrote the bad check. In some states merchants can go directly to the police in such situations, and the writer of the check can be charged with a criminal offense.
