Often times debt collectors threaten to involve a debtor's workplace as a way to get the debtor to pay all or part of the debt. This common tactic is legal, so long as the debt collection company doesn't actually discuss the debtor's debt with the debtor's employer - - instead, the debt collection company is only allowed to ask to verify information, such as the debtor's address, telephone number and employment status.
Should your employer not allow you to take personal phone calls at work, inform the debt collection company of this fact - they'll have to stop contacting you at work.
If the debt collection company wants to "serve" you with a lawsuit at work, they can do so, however, its highly unlikely they'd do this (unless they lack your home address) as "service" is usually sent by a Clerk of Court's office via certified mail.
