spousal responsibility of deceased mates debt

My father had debt in his name only. Is my mother responsible to repay this debt. He had a small life insurance policy. They always lived paycheck to paycheck there is no savings.

Re: spousal responsibility of deceased mates debt

Generally, the spouse is not responsible for debts contracted by the other. Of course debt secured by property would either have to be paid, exempted, or surrendered.
