Legal Question in Criminal Law in Ohio

my 17 year old caught w/illegal substance

my 17year old son was caught with 3 of his friends in his car by county sheriff dept with marijuana. They were not smoking at the time but my son told him they all had done it. they were in a school parking lot on christmas break. I signed a paper that I didn't get a copy of & wasn't told what it was I was signing. We received no paper work @ that time. The officer mentioned substance abuse & something to the order of deliquent juvenile. We live in lorain county. Should I try to get a lawyer & will this go to court? What should we expect. He's a senior & is trying to get placement for a job in his field. This is not something he does all the time. His usual friends were out of town - he very seldom is with the boys he was caught with. The officer said 'the only thing (sons name) had on him was papers. I know about this - he does smoke & he rolls his own on occasion like his grandfather did.

Thank you for your help & advice - we're going crazy with worry.

First, you should probably serious consider obtaining counsel. The charge itself is not so serious, but the results of it can be. The charge of possession of marijuana or possession of drug paraphrenalia carries a mandatory drivers license suspension in Ohio.

You need to set a goal of no actual conviction in this case. In order to do that you need to know about pre-trial diversion and heard and submitted. Both these provisions are basically about putting him on probation BEFORE a conviction, then coming back to court and having the case dismissed if he does well.
