You can be charged in a number of ways, as long as it happens within a year of the date of the offense. The officer can write a citation or have the court send you the charge in the mail.

The one thing you need to avoid is having your license suspended. It is mandatory if you were charged under the marijuana possession state code (ORC 2925.11 possession; or 2925.14 paraphernalia).

Prosecutors are sometimes willing to amend the charge in some fashion that can avoid the license suspension. Depending on what court you are in, marijuana offenses rarely result in any jail time, but probation is a possibility, so it's safest to be clean by the time of sentencing. In short, you need an attorney to help control your losses. This is serious since a drug law license suspension will always show up to a police officer if he runs your name. You need to avoid that.
