Embezzlement

Was Treasurer for local teaching association and wrote checks to self. Money has all been returned in addition to an additional 15oo.dollars before an audit was conducted Association turned over to county prosecutor What can happen to me?

Even though you returned the money (which is a good move and will ultimately help you), if the checks you wrote to yourself were unauthorized, you could still face legal liablity. It is up to the prosecutor to decide whether or not he or she feels you broke the law and decides to proceed. You might also face civil action (i.e. a lawsuit brought in the name of the association apart from a criminal prosecution). If you fear that the prosecution will proceed, I strongly encourage you to contact an attorney immediately. Sometimes it is easier to resolve matters with a prosecutor before charges are actually filed.
