Legal Question in Criminal Law in Ohio

Ohio and Federal gun control

On June 1,1999 i was convicted of Burglary and given 4 years community control. After release from probation my officer told me I had to petition the justice department to be able to own a gun. I didn't know if there was a time limit on your felony or whether it is for life that i can't own a firearm. Or how expensive it is for an attorney to file a request with the government, or if it is effective. I would like to hunt and possibly get a concealed weapons carry permit.

Re: Ohio and Federal gun control

You can apply to the court for relief from disabilty under the provisions of ORC 2923.14. If you have had no additional problems and successfully completed your 4 years of community control you do qualify. The decision is discretionary with the Judge so in most cases you have a better chance if you have an attorney take care of this.
