What is the police procedure for a call concerning possible intended suicide?

After a fight, my children seen my husband load his gun and put it in his pocket, tell the kids he loved them and said he was taking a walk. After not being able to find him and yelling for him, the kids called 911. They came at him, yelling and screaming pointing shot gun at him, threw him to the ground and cuffed him, then arrested him for inducing a panic? Is this what you do when you are concerned someone might commit suicide? Now, he is in jail and I haven't been able to get him out. I paid the bond 4 hours ago, he was taken in 6 hours ago (they didn't have him processed for me to pay it before then).. Now what?

The officer s will most likely be justified in their response an that they will claim that it was the safest and quickest way to defuse a potentially dangerous situtation. They were aware of the fact that he was armed and in an aggitated state of mind.

They may request a mental evaluation prior to his release. That can take a while.

Upon suspicion of a crime, the police can hold any person for 72 hours... They could do this considering the obviously volatile situation. The time will give him time to think and re-consider his actions. Whether they could actually convict him of anything is somewhat questionable.
