Re: Presentence
The purpose of the presentence investigation (PSI) is to assist the court in imposing an appropriate sentence. Generally, PSIs are compiled by a probation department. A defendant is interviewed by a probation officer and background information is gathered about the defendant (employment, education, family, drug and/or mental issues, etc.). The report also generally contains a defendant's criminal record, probation/parole status, and information about prior incarceration.
