The best things to do for first time theft cases is to ask the court or prosecutor whether you qualify for a diversion program. This would permit you to avoid a conviction altogether. If that doesn't work, a plea to a disorderly conduct is a decent plea that could be expunged if you're a first offender. If you could possibly get a lawyer before you do anything that would be best - just to clarify all your options.
