I would strongly recommned you interview, then hire a competent attorney familiar with this area of law. There are a great number of issues, and an experienced lawyer often can work an OVI case to obtain great results. If convicted, this will cost you significantly increased insurance rates, may impact employment opportunities, may preclude travel to Canada, and cannot be expunged. In short, this is an offense that carries significant and long term consequences. I would anticipate that an experienced attorney would be happy to meet with you at no cost to evaluate your case. Thus, it would seem prudent to do so. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

You should have a lawyer.
Public defenders are lawyers, and normally very good ones.
If you can afford to hire a lawyer that you choose, most people are moer comfortable with that.
Do not, under any circumstance, try to do this without a lawyer.
