Legal Question in Education Law in Ohio

My daughter goes to a very expensive private school. My mother always paid her tuition but died last year. The school never told me or asked me anything about the tuiton so I figured my mother paid it off. This entire school year they have not said a word about it and always sent home her report cards which they usually do not do if you owe money. Her freshman year when we owed some money they sat us down and gave us papers about and all but this year I have heard nothing. I asked for her transcripts because she is transferring and now they are saying I cant have them because there is money owed. Can they do this? they never told me anything about owed money, i thought it was all paid off

In Ohio, much will depend upon the contract you signed with the school. If they have the contractual right to withhold the transcript information, then there may be nothing you can do. There may be laws about this in the state of Ohio, but that would require some checking. If there is nothing in the contract that allows them to withhold the transcript, then they may not only have breached the contract with you, but also they may have run afoul of Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act.
