Medicaid Patient Liability/Nursing Home

My mom went into a rehab/long term care facility in Jan. 2003. She is a 56 year old stroke patient with brain damage. The first three months were for rehab, and then we made a decision to keep her in long term care. When she was addmitted not one person from the facility talked with us about anything finacial. They had my mom sign papers when none of us were present. I talked with and seen these people several times and nonone every mentioned anything financial. Six months later (June 2003)they say that we owe them 6 months worth of her social security checks, and if we don't pay, her medicaid will be cut. Noone told us her check should be going to the facility everymonth or we would have given it to them. I am my Mother's power of attorney, why didn't they tell me about this. Are we responsible to pay this debt? I never signed any papers. We are making payments, but I feel this was their mistake. Before my mom went into the facility she had debts to repay, she never even started receiving social security check until the month that she was addmitted to the facility. We repaid her debts with some of her checks.

We had her home for 4 month prior to the rehab when she had no income at all. Thank you,
