Legal Question in Elder Law in Ohio

Medicaid Spend Down Rules

My grandparents both live in nursing homes. Grandpa is the community spouse (about 80K, no home, 1 car). Grandma has severe alzheimers and just became eligible for Medicaid in November 2001 (less than $1500 in assets). They both recently received checks from their supplemental insurance for about $14,000 each. After switching from mutually owned to stock the supplemental ins. company paid respective shares or cash - we elected cash payment). The two checks - $14,000 each - arrived in the mail at the end of 2001. What do we and can we do with them? We want to avoid Grandpa going over the 87K threshhold and keep Grandma's medicaid. Can we and how do we spend the $28K down? What about OH medicaid laws, etc. Anyone with information and advice about Ohio stuff call me a 919-420-7826 or call Elaine in Bowling Green at 419-352-1953. Thanks!

Re: Medicaid Spend Down Rules

The easiest way to spend down is to get a prepaid funeral.
