how long can a non-custodial parent go without seeing or contacting child for it to be adandament?

In Ohio, the rule is one year without any contact which includes calling, visiting or even just sending cards or letters. Usually a hearing will be held where the parent who has not contacted the child will be permitted to appear. The court may refuse to terminate that parent's rights if he/she can give an explanation of why he or she could not have contact with the child during that period of time.
