Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

Adopting Second cousin's child

Hello,

My second Cousin, who resides in Ohio, has asked that I adopt her baby; due to be born in late May 2002. Although I was born in Ohio and lived there until I was in my twenties, I now reside with my husband in Virginia.

I need advice in proceeding with the adioption. Do we deal with Ohio laws or Virginia laws? Do we need a home study? My sister is an attorney in Florida, but I need and Attorney in Ohio. My immediate family is in the Massillon/Canton area. The baby is is Akron.

I would appreciate your advice and information on Federal and State laws.

Thank You,

Re: Adopting Second cousin's child

You present an interesting question. Since you are trying to adopt your cousin's child and you live in Virginia, I would try an adoption in Virginia. If it were done in Ohio, you would need a home study, a criminal records check and several recomendations. Virginia may be simpler.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!
