Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

Adopting a Step Child

My husband wants to adopt my daughter and give her his last name. I was never married to the birth father and the birth father has not seen her in over six years. He does however, pay child support. What do we have to do to begin the process. Can we do it ourselves? Do we have to notify the birth father? Can the birth father protest? Can I continue to receive child support?

Re: Adopting a Step Child

It is not that big a deal to do the adoption. You need to go to the probate court where you live to get the paperwork. It may be a little expensive. Since the natural father pays child support, he has to have notice of the adoption. Once the adoption goes through, he will not be obligated to pay child support.

Good luck!!!!!!!
