Birth Certificate

I will have a baby in July 2009. And im still with the babies dad.. we are not married.. but we are worried if we dont get married and i put him on the birth certifcate the state will make him pay something? is it true?

Child support would be required from the father if you as the child's mother is on public assistance. Another way to look at this is, for the sake of the child, why wouldn't the father's name appear on the child's birth certificate?

If you do not receive medical or cash assistance, the state will do nothing unless you specifically request their services by completing a IV-D (four D) application.

If you receive cash assistance or medicaid, are not living with the father or he is listed as inactive in the household, the state will establish paternity (which includes having the father's name placed on the birth certificate) and seek a child and medical support order from the father.

If you are on assistance and you fail to comply with the establishment, they will terminate your benefits.
