When you change your name in a dissolution how long can you wait to officially make the change?

Generally speaking, you can have it done any time, so long as your decree orders the name change. While you never have to change your name, even if the decree says you are restored, it makes it much easier to obtain the change if it's in the decree.

I would caution that, the longer you wait, the bigger a hassle it may be at the BMV and Social Security office. So, if you're going to make the change, it may be easiest to do it sooner.
