at what age does a child choose the parent they wish to live with and what are the laws concerning this?

There really isn't one. Obviously the older a child is, until age 18, the greater the likelihood that the court will figure in the age of minor in determining best interests. And practically, with many teenagers, disregarding their wishes will not do anybody any good.
