What is conflict of interest?

I was referred to a lawyer that said he could not take my case cause of conflict of interest. I need to take my ex husband back to court because he backed out of our divorce agreement and for money that he owes me, so is he representing my ex? I also have unpaid bills so maybe the lawyer is a debt collector that was assigned my case? My last lawyer and I didn't get along cause we didin't agree on certain things and that's the reason I'm looking for a new lawyer so I was also thinking that my old lawyer told some of the local lawyers not to take my case because he's mad? I have no ideal what my ex could be taking be back to court for besides getting his child support payments lowered but this isn't the first time this has happened, when we first filed for divorce I called a lawyer that said the same thing and ended up being my ex husbands lawyer.

A conflict of interest arises when a lawyer's representation of one party would compromise relations that he has with another. It is likely that the lawyer you refer to represents your ex-husband. Although, it is also possible that he has simply consulted with him.
