How many contempts of court can the defendant get without any consequences?

A very good question and it probably differs from Court to Court. It also depends on the nature of the contempt, failure to pay support or interference with visitation etc. But generally, in my experience jail time is not imposed until after at least the third contempt. Normally to impose the jail sentence you have to have the hearing in front of a Judge and not a Magistrate. Also, if contempt is found then there should be an award of your costs and reasonable attorney fees to bring the contempt motion. So theoretically it should not cost you anything, except time and frustration, to bring each contempt. Wish I had a better answer for you.
