If during the course of a marriage the step father adopts the child of the wife from a previous marriage and they in turn divorce isn't that child considered one of his children when asked how many children are a result of the marriage?

Adoption makes the child the child of the person adopting. The natural parent becomes as a stranger to the child. So the answer is that the step parent in this case is the legal parent.
