Do you have to have a layer to file for divorce or can you just fill out paperwork and do it yourself?

You certainly can do it yourself. However, if there are valuable property or children at issue, retaining a lawyer will probably save you in the long run.

Also, if both parties agree to separate and can between themselves agree to the property allocation and custody arrangement (including support) a dissolution can be accomplished. This is far less costly even with a lawyer.
