Divorce

I lived with a man during the 1980's , we were going to get married. We changed my last name to his on my social security card. Then we split up. I still have his name on my SS card. We meet all the requirements for a common law marriage. I want to change my name back, but the SS Admin., wants divorce papers.....help

Besides going through the process of a divorce, another way to officially change your name is through the probate court in your county. You can visit the administration desk, ask for a form and instructions for completing it or seek the help of an attorney.

Unless you established all of the elements of a common law marriage prior to 1982, there is no common law marriage. It was outlawed in Ohio in 1981, and some sort of attorney letter to the local Social Security office may clear the matter up.
