Does a separation in years ever become a something such as a common law divorce or is there a such of a thing as abandoment after a certain length of time.

There is no such thing as a commopn law divorce. You will need a real divorce, but one of the grounds for divorce is being seperate and apart for more than one year. Contact counsel for more information.
