Can you help my friend?

I have this friend that ask her husband for a divorce, so he went to this lawyer that is no longer practicing law because of drug problems for a dissolution, after the dissolution they continued to live together even after the filing on September 12, 2001 till August 2004, this woman gave him everything and ask for nothing, not even alimony, this couple was married from July 11, 1968 till October 15, 2001 and had 3 children as a result of this marriage, but according to the papers that was written up by this lawyer it says they were married on July 11,2001 and that no children were born as issue of the marriage, is this a legal dissolution?

Was the dissolution paperwork ever filed with the court? It does not become effective until it is a court order.
