Father losing his rights to child

I don't know about Ohio law, but in N.C. (my state) a father does not automatically lose his rights as a parent. Someone must petition the court for his parental rights to be terminated based upon various grounds, including abandonment, lack of paying child support, etc. Each ground has a period of time required, ranging usually from 6 months to a year. And, if he "shapes up" at the last minute, his improvements in behavior must be considered by the court. Your law may be similar to this, or maybe not.

consent/adoption

Ohio Revised Code 3107.07 provides that the consent to adoption of a minor is not requiredof the birthparent if that birthparent failed without justifiable cause to communicate or to providefor the maintenance and support as required bylaw for a period of at least one (1) year immediately proceeding the filing of adoptionpapers. The birthparent would lose his/her rights after such an adoption took place. Abirthparent otherwise retains his/her rights.
