Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

pregnant teen wants sole custody

My 16 year old daughter from here in Ohio became involved with a 22 year old man from Texas. Now she is pregnant and has decided to keep the child. However, prior to her discovering that she was pregnant her and the father seperated. Because of his lack of interest to the child, she wants sole pysical and legal custody of her child. When he was informed of the pregrnacy he made it clear he had no interest in helping. Where do we go from here? What happens if he refuses to grant her sole custody though he showed no care for her or child prior to legal assistance? He dropped out of college at 19 and joined the Navy in which he is now AWAL. I do not think he is a responsible person but fear he will try to get the child 6 months out of the year. Me and my husband both have stable jobs and want to help our daughter and her child.

Re: pregnant teen wants sole custody

Custody cannot be obtained until the child is born, and the father must be served with the petition in the juvenile court where the child resides after birth. Mother can then ask for custody and child support, and it can be taken directly from the Navy.
