Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

I am going to be a single mom. I am 6 months pregnant. The father and I are together but we are not engaged or married and we don't know if we will get married. Everyone keeps telling me make sure the baby has my last name other wise it will make everything complicated. Some people have said that if I give the baby his last name he could get custody easier if there was a custody battle and that he would have more say over the child than I will. Is this true?

In Ohio, if custody becomes an issue, the courts will determine it based upon what is in the best interest of the child. Whose last name the child has will have no bearing upon a custody dispute.

When the child is born, you will may want the father to sign the birth certificate as the father so that it will be easier to pursue him for child support should things go south in the relationship.
