Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio

does my step sister have any rights

Hi,

My ex-step sister was adopted by another man when she was 5. The adoption was allowed because her biological father (my ex-step father)never paid child support for her. Her biological father passed away without a will, and he never remarried after he and my mother divorced. My ex-stepsister is having a very difficult time locationg her original birth certificate to prove she is his daughter, so she can get his inheritance. If she can't locate one, everything will go to the state of ohio. My question is. what happens to the original birth certificate after the adoption. Is it null and void. Is she not entitled since she was adopted by another. I am trying to help her out, but we keep running into dead ends. Thanks--name removed--Dillon

Re: does my step sister have any rights

It was always my understanding that adoption terminates the previous parents rights and responsibilities. Therefore, it would be my opinion that your step sister is not entitled to anything from her biological father.
