In general, it is always a good idea to ensure you have at least 6 months minimum time remaining before the expiration of a passport, as most countries require that amount of remaining time to permit entry. Add to this the fact that for many countries it often takes more than a month and sometimes several to renew a passport. Even after his conditional residence is removed, if he travels outside of the US, he will be required to the use the passport of his home country to enter another country or to come back into the US. Therefore, once there is less than a year remaining on his current passport, I would recommend renewing it.

If he has no intention of leaving the US, then that may not be necessary. But, if he has relatives outside of the US, I would suggest ensuring he keep a current one in case there is an emergency that requires him to go to a foreign country. Having a current passport will make that easier to accomplish.
