A friend moved to the US from Wales and married an American. What needs to be done to get a social security number so she can work, and get a driver's license.

Re: Social Secrity Number

Under the circumstances you've described, your friend cannot properly obtain a social security card, nor an Ohio driver's license until she "adjusts" her status to that of a lawful permanent resident alien (aka green card). I strongly recommend she immediately contact a knowledgeable immigration attorney. Depending on how long she has been in the US, and her status when she entered, will determine how to proceed next.

Your friend will need to apply first for adjustment of status (for the greencard). With that application an application for an employment authorization card can be made. Once the employment authorization card is issued, she can then bring it to the social security office for issuance of a SSN. I regularly assist newly married couples with the process. If she would like to contact my office, please ask her to do so by phone or email.

My best wishes.
