I am an artist and would like to know about the legality of using photos as reference sources for artwork.

Not enough information is provided to give a proper answer. What photos are you referring to? Ones previously taken of your clients? If so, you should have a standard clause in your client contract that allows you to use photos taken to promote your services. Consult with a local intellectual property attorney in your area.
