Legal Question in Employment Law in Ohio
My company was recently purchased. I was promised a management position with the new employer, which is what I had been doing. The employees that were not retained were given generous severance packages based on years of service. After 30 days of new ownership I was told they could not afford my salary and I was let go. I feel I was cheated, as I had 22 years of service and lost a lot of money in the transition because my severance package would have been significant.

First, employees in Ohio are at-will (unless and exception applies). This means that they can terminate you without even giving a reason. Second, there is nothing in the law that says a company must give a severance package. Companies do this in return for a waiver which agrees that the employee will not sue for discrimination down the road. "Cheated" is not a legal term. If you feel that you were discriminated against because of your age, race, gender, national origin, or religion, then there could be some legal action taken.
And finally, the only way to know is to talk to a plaintiff's employment discrimination attorney and hear what this attorney says.
