Legal Question in Employment Law in Ohio
Discriminatory hiring practices
I applied to work for a large manufacturing company in Ohio. The job qualifications stated that an applicant must have 6 mos. of manufacturing experience, be able to lift 70 lbs., and be able to work in a team environment. Well, I submitted my resume about four weeks ago and have had no call, despite my extensive experience. My brother-in-law, who has had one job in his lifetime (for four months), submitted his resume, and got a call a week later. He has no experience at all, but he is a young, white male. I am a female, in my mid-twenties.
I got curious and decided to submit a new resume to the company, with a more masculine sounding first name, but left everything else on the resume the same. For example, the only thing that I changed at all was my name from Jessica to Jessie. Well, if I get called under that name, do I have grounds for a gender discrimination lawsuit? Do I have one anyway, because my underqualified brother got called over myself, who meets the job criteria over and above what they ask for? I am very upset over this company and their hiring procedures. They have hired three of my male friends over me, and I am more qualified than all of them. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Discriminatory hiring practices
In a word .. Maybe (probably).. Contact an attorney in your area and provide them with a more detailed account of what happened. i.e. did you have an interview after submitting the "Jessie" resume? What were your male friends' qualifications.. What were the qualifications of the job and how did you meet them? etc.
