Hi,
Is it ethical for an employer to repeatedly open mail addressed to me from the financial firm in charge of my work 401k, it is addressed to me at the office address.

No, it is not ethical. But more importantly, it is against federal law. I would suggest to my employer that they do not have your consent to open your mail. Also, you should designate your home address to the financial institution for mail.
