Legal Question in Employment Law in Ohio

Medical Insurance Benefits

My son's employer, small company, recently quit paying for family medical insurance coverage. They still pay for the employee's policy. Employees with no family saw no change in their paycheck. My son, large family, saw over $100 loss. Is this discrimination legal?

Re: Medical Insurance Benefits

It's only illegal to discriminate on the basis of a protected category, such as race, sex, religion, whistleblower status, etc... The type of discrimination you describe is very common in our society. Large families who do take advantage of family health benefits provided by employers typically get more in terms of compensation than the single person who cannot participate in the group coverage. If you think that your son is the victim of discrimination on the basis of sex, age, race, religion or some other trait protected by our laws, consult with an attorney to discuss the specifics.
