Part time vs. Full time
A friend of mine has been working as a 'part time' employee at an Engineering firm doing IT work for almost 3 years. The last year he worked 40 hours a week every week, but just doesn't get any benifits/insurance. I'm curious if there is a point after working enough hours where a part time employee has to legally become a full time employee. And would they then be entitled to the benifits of a full time position?

the fair labor standards act protects the rights of a wage earner. There is no automatic conversion into full time but an argument can be made that there is an implication after successive work weeks of 40 hrs. The overtime factor over 40 hours should also be explored.
