Legal Question in Employment Law in Ohio
Social Security Number Disclosure
I live in Ohio and work as a substitute teacher at a high school. Recently the school payroll administrator started requiring all substitute teachers to write their social security number on their sign-in sheet. This sheet is kept in a notebook that is accessible to all substitute teachers at the school as well as anyone who walks by and opens the notebook. Substitute teachers must flip through all the pages to get to their page each time they come into the school. I do not wish for my SSN to be displayed in this way, which greatly increases the opportunity for identity theft. I want to know if the Privacy Act of 1974 or any other state or federal laws will back me up in my refusal to follow this policy. The payroll administrator has told the substitute teachers that if we don't put our social security number on our sign-in sheet, we will not be paid for our work, which I feel is also in violation of federal law.
