Broken furnace, children in home, landlord asked us to wait a couple of days for repair to take place

In Ohio, your landlord's breach of the lease agreement in this regard would likely give you the right to charge him for a stay in a hotel room until the matter of the furnace was properly addressed. You might want to send the landlord a letter suggesting this course of action and see if he is willing to foot the bill for it.
